Magento Review

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

The PeC Review has recently declared that Magento is the “Open Source Powerhouse.” If you follow the link, you’ll even see a video walking you through their review.

Magento is an excellent ecommerce platform. Some users may find it too complicated, but I believe it is one of the top solutions for online retailers in the market today. It earns every bit of glitter and sparkle from its four and a half stars in this The PeC Review.

The review goes on to talk about the power of Magento but does remind the reader that some skill is needed to make full use of the platform:

But to take full advantage of Magento, developers need a knowledge of Apache web servers, MySQL, SOAP, PHP, XML, XHTML, and CSS. Arguably these skills are required for most shopping carts or platforms, but Magento is much more hands on and even a standard implementation will have you accessing files and writing code that other platforms might not require.

While SimpleHelix has always stood by the quality of Magento as compared to other e-commerce platforms, it’s encouraging to see detailed reviews supporting that opinion.

magento_logoMany SimpleHelix customers start their first Magento storefront here. Magento is an easy install and there are several tutorials on this website to assist you in setting it up. (See tutorial page for Magento here.) However, what about stylizing your store? If you are new to e-commerce and especially if this is your first store, you may not have a clear design in mind yet. Rest assured that there are plenty of free Magento themes available online to help you get started. This website is a good starting point offering plenty of options in plenty of categories. This is a great jumping-off point since you might not have any income from your store yet to pay for a design.
