Magento Demo

Friday, March 27th, 2009

magento_logoIf you’re completely new to the world of e-commerce, or at least to Magento, you should make sure you check out the demo from the Magento site itself. The demo shows you exactly how a storefront can look and feel as well as giving you a chance to walk through purchases (without actually buying anything, of course) to see how it handles. Of course, the power of Magento is in how customizable it is – but this gives you a starting point.

Cutting Storage Costs with SSD

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

As companies are trying to find ways to cut costs, there are tips and tricks all across the web. This article even references SSD as being a good way to cut storage costs:

SSD is dropping in cost and increasing in capacity. The performance gains compared to physical disk are as great as the energy savings from not having spinning disks. To meet the same performance speeds of eight SSDs, it would take intricate striping of data over more than 200 of the fastest Fibre Channel drives. The energy savings alone make the component-level price delta almost a moot issue. Over the next two years, the price of SSD will drop so drastically, SSD will become a solution for higher capacity environments as well

While SimpleHelix offers SSD packages, they do more than just provide energy-saving and storage solutions. The customers who switch to our SSD packages become amazed by the speed alone. Why don’t you ask us how SSD hosting can help you today?

Twitter and Magento

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

twitter Magento has decidedly to put the popular microblogging tool – Twitter – to good use. They have launched a Q&A account on twitter to act as another support facet for the users of the open-source e-commerce platform.

The @ask_magento service allows users to ask other Magento users about issues relating to the e-commerce platform and is meant to be a complement to the current community forums provided by Magento.

Members of the Magento team will also monitor the feed, potentially meaning that users will be able to receive answers directly from Magento itself.

Of course, you’ll need your own Twitter account to use this service, but once you do you can subscribe to their updates here. We look forward to watching the popularity of this grow!

Magento and Drupal

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

While Magento is often touted as an e-commerce package, those looking for a good integration with a CMS find themselves struggling. Luckily, Drupal has stepped up to the challenge to offer Magento modules for a Drupal web site.

Magento is one of the most famous, open-source e-Commerce solution. Magento offers a very nice back-end interface, but suffer of lack of CMS capabilities.
Installing Magento modules on your Drupal site, you’ll be able to run Magento as back-end only.

It may not be the perfect solution for someone wanting to make use a powerful CMS with an e-commerce package, but it is an option to consider.

What Is SSD?

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

Now that we have announced that SimpleHelix is offered SSD hosting, let’s discuss what SSD hosting is! SSD stands for Solid-State Drive and refers to the state of the drive as a storage of persistent data. Here is a good write-up that outlines the basics of solid-state drives.

Solid state is an electrical term that refers to electronic circuitry that is built entirely out of semiconductors. The term was originally used to define those electronics such as a transistor radio that used semiconductors rather than vacuum tubes in its construction. Most all electronics that we have today are built around semiconductors and chips. In terms of a SSD, it refers to the fact that the primary storage medium is through semiconductors rather than a magnetic media such as a hard drive.

Now, you might say that this type of storage already exists in the form of flash memory drives that plug into the USB port. This is partially true as solid state drives and USB flash drives both use the same type of non-volatile memory chips that retain their information even when they have no power. The difference is in the form factor and capacity of the drives. While a flash drive is designed to be external to the computer system, an SSD is designed to reside inside the computer in place of a more traditional hard drive.
