More SSD Commentary and Review

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

There a good write-up at Sir Arthur’s Den about the acceptance of SSD across the hard drive production world. The author discusses changes in attitude from some in the industry and acceptance by most. Here is where the author mentions Western Digital:

WD talks about the consumer market, but there is no doubt that at least in this first part of 2009 solid state technology is massively proposed to companies above all, to data centers and to whom had the need to process huge amounts of data at absolutely crazy speeds.

That’s essentially why Simple Helix has adopted this technology. Our data centers do process “huge amounts of data at absolutely crazy speeds.” We’re glad others recognize the value of the speed as well.

The author included this quote in increase support:

“SSDs and solid-state technology are essential to our long-term product roadmaps, and we will maintain our investment levels to deliver leading technology as required by our current and future customers“, the new Seagate COO Robert Whitmore stated during a conference.

Magento Announces Enterprise Edition

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

magento_logoMagento announced yesterday the release of an enterprise edition.  Magento assures it’s community that they are still very much committed to the concept of open source. While their open-source version will still get the attention it deserves from the developers, they simply created a commercial edition to market more towards the larger companies.

It is geared towards larger companies and includes additional features, including ROI specific features, not available in our open source, Community Edition product. In addition to features, our Enterprise Edition will include SLA based support with guaranteed response times, warranties, indemnification and soon, PA-DSS certification.

Magento also confirms that the transition from the open-source to the commercial edition is an easy one and currently used plugins and themes will still work.

SimpleHelix looks forward to working with customers using this commercial edition. If you have any questions about hosting your site with the enterprise edition of Magento, feel free to email our sales team.

The Appeal of the SSD

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Many wonder why SimpleHelix started offering SSD hosting in the first place, and it’s because so many are starting to feel like the Solid State Drives offer less potential for outtage and therefore greater reliability. Here is a perfect example of the positive discussion revolving around SSD.

Unlike standard drives, they have no moving parts, making them more shock resistant. Notebook users in crowded trains, for example, need not fear a crashed drive if bumped into by fellow passenger. Additionally, SSDs are silent and relatively energy efficient.

SSD is also faster than standard drives when it comes to accessing data in standard applications. That’s immediately obvious when switching on a computer: start-ups time are half the normal rate.

The same qualities that make it desirable in a notebook computer make it appealing to the web master wanting maximum uptime for their websites.  SimpleHelix is proud to now offer that to the customers, both new and old, in an affordable package.
